The jingle of the pouch of coins was decidedly lesser than it had been only moments before, and even more so than when Scetis had first left The Convocation. Having left so suddenly he had not had time to actually prepare supplies to take with him. So for the moment he was willing to pay for food as he went, and for anything else he needed.

The boat he had left far behind him, hidden in amongst a conveniently and carefully planted patch of reeds for when he needed it next, and had walked for a day and a half inland towards the mountains that were the natural border between The Realm and The Convocation. They loomed over the land, large already, their tops sprinkled with the never melting snow which glowed brightly in the sunshine, and as the day waned they glowed bright pinks and oranges fading into deep purple.

Scetis looked around him at the busy market of the village he had found. Sheep were crying out in pens nearby; a group of musicians strategically placed outside the only inn in town were playing a merry tune that danced its way through the throng of people who had come to town to sell their wares. Smells of baking bread, roasting meat, and other delectables wafted on the slight breeze and made his mouth water. Stall holders cried out their wares and the prices over the top of the noise. Brightly colored awnings flapped lazily on whatever air managed to penetrate the crowd. Children ran laughing through it all, enjoying a moment of freedom from working with their parents. The festive air was further continued by the small stage and a troupe of players acting out a story for the enjoyment of the crowd, who jeered, clapped, and laughed at the appropriate times.

These were scenes Scetis had seen before on his travels. It was a once-a-month grand fair where people bought silly trinkets for loved ones, or hard to come by commodities. He had no memories of them from his childhood, so he stood back, chewing on the heel of the warm loaf he had just bought while he watched the children of the farms and the town playing together. He envied their natural ability to make friends, to look past their differences and just enjoy each other’s company. From the moment Tavae had taken him on as an apprentice, he had told Scetis that he was talented and different to other children his age. All through his time with his old mentor, and even beyond, he had reiterated it to him. Scetis now could see how it had helped mold him into the man he was today. He felt a slight pang of loss for what could have been.

Walking on, he passed the hawkers trying to get him to stop and buy something for his sweetheart, for his mother, or sister. Scetis shook his head at them and carried on, still looking at their wares for the unusual and rare item that might be useful to him.
